Shower leaks can become a serious problem if left unchecked.

Water coming from a shower leak will cause damage to structural wood, metal and concrete. It can cause mould growth, damage to electrical wiring and other problems, cosmetic and structural. These effects can be dangerous to health and property, and are expensive to repair. Therefore, it is important to seal the shower leak as soon as it is noticed, and even more: it is recommended to prevent leaks developing.

Showers will most often leak through the shower surface. Any break in the grout or tiles will let water through immediately, however, even if there is no break, water can still penetrate through, because tiles and grout are porous.

The most effective way to treat these types of leaks is also the simplest. This is down to the advanced waterproofing technology in Shower Plug.

Shower Plug is a liquid sealer that is brushed onto tiles and grout. It soaks into the tile and grout surface, binds with it and repels water molecules. This will last for a minimum of 10 years.

Why is this such a simple process?

  • 1 hour job. Shower ready to use in 8 hours.
  • DIY application method and simple tools required.
  • Ideal for DIY or professionals.
  • Will waterproof the shower without removing the tiles.
  • Non-toxic, non-harmful.

Shower Waterproofing Method

Gear Required

  • Household shower cleaner
  • Cleaning gloves
  • Cleaning brush
  • Masking tape (recommended)
  • Shower Plug sealer
  • Natural-bristle brush
  • Small bucket
  • Clean cloths or rags

Clean the Shower

Use any household shower cleaner to remove all dirt and mould from the surface.

Once the surface is clean, dry it out or let it dry.

At this point, you must check the surface for any cracks or holes. If you find any breaks in the tiles or grout greater than 1mm in width, you need to repair them with sand-cement grout, let the grout cure and then proceed to applying Shower Plug.

If the surface is intact or the holes are 1mm or less, proceed to the next step when the surface is dry.

You can choose to protect silicone, metal or plastic surfaces using masking tape, or just avoid them. Shower Plug will not do significant damage to these surfaces but contact is not advised.

Apply Shower Plug

  1. Apply Shower Plug to the walls. Using the natural-bristle brush, ‘paint’ Shower Plug on with strokes of varying direction (horizontal, vertical and/or diagonal strokes) to ensure you cover every spot. Wait 5 minutes.
  2. Apply a second coat to the walls. Wait 5 minutes.
  3. Wipe away any remaining liquid from the walls. (Do not let Shower Plug dry out on the surface).
  4. Apply one coat of Shower Plug to the floor. Wait 5 minutes.
  5. Apply a second coat to the floor. Wait 5 minutes.
  6. Wipe away any remaining liquid from the floor.

Recommended step:

Apply a silicone joint sealer to the wall and floor joints. This will ensure that no cracks appear in this area due to building movement.

Let Shower Plug cure for 8 hours. Good airflow will help this process.

Results

The shower will be ready to use after 8 hours. It will be waterproof for a minimum of 10 years. The surface will also be mould proof and easier to clean.

The area beneath the shower tiles will dry out, because Shower Plug lets the shower tiles and grout remain breathable. Mould below the shower surface will die as the area dries out.

The shower surface’s appearance and texture will remain unchanged. Shower Plug simply soaks into the surface and leaves an invisible finish.

Final Notes

Shower Plug can be reapplied at any time if needed.

Shower Plug can be applied as a preventative measure for new showers. The shower will also be easier to clean.

Shower Plug can be used to waterproof other masonry surfaces, including bricks, stone and concrete.
